His “Aphrodite in Alba” is rooted in jazz improvisation. The work is remarkably heartfelt and performed with delicate sentimentality from Chappell, [clarinetist Robert] DiLutis and [saxophonist Noah] Getz. The unwavering, pulsing piano lines pair perfectly with the whimsical melodic playing in the clarinet and saxophone. Although this album contains many fine works that listeners will find appealing, Chappell’s composition is sure to be a stand-out favorite.” [Note: The correct title of this work is “Aphrodite”.]

Rich, fulfilling and best enjoyed uninterrupted. Based on the slow movement of Chappell’s ‘Jazz Sonata for Piano’, ‘Aphrodite‘ uses jazz harmony and the standard AABA song form. The composition process was deeply rooted in improvisation and one can feel this in the relaxed feel presented. Beautiful writing that allows [saxophonist Noah] Getz’s alto to sing with contemplative beauty, while giving the clarinet a more improvisatory sound than usual [performed by Robert DiLutis]. Chappell’s playing is moving and makes you want to hear more.”

Employing a virtuoso technique and subtle rhythmic and tonal control, Chappell achieved the percussive drive of the opening Allegro marcato; the enigmatic rumbling in the Presto misterioso; the stark grandeur of the Adagio molto appassionato; and the turgid agitation of the final Ruvido ed ostinato. Chappell’s performance exploded with Latin colors — all with great finesse.”

The Montpelier Times Argus wrote: “The masterpiece of the program was Barber’s Sonata for Piano, Opus 26, which Chappell delivered with a bravura albeit sensitive performance. Chappell is one fine pianist, with more than enough virtuosity for this magnificent work. He had power, virtuosity, clarity and sensitivity, but more importantly, he was able to convey his understanding of the difficult work to the audience.
